What Is A Fertility “Consult”?

A diagnosis of cancer brings with it a mountain of brand new information, as well as plenty of choices that need to be made. This can easily become overwhelming and difficult. It’s almost impossible not to feel like it’s urgent to move as fast as possible into treatment, so you can be cured. But, if you want to know what cancer treatment means for you and your fertility potential (your ability to have children one day), talking with or getting a “consult” with a fertility specialist may be a good option.

In this consult, a fertility specialist will sit down with you and discuss your medical history, cancer diagnosis, treatment plan and how those specifically relate to your fertility. Important factors include your prior pregnancy history, surgeries, your menstrual cycle, and your future family goals. The evaluation will usually also include an ultrasound (a medical scan) your uterus and ovaries to gain more information about how many eggs you have or your egg “reserve.” All of this information helps the expert guide you through all the options that are right for your fertility preservation before, during, and after your cancer treatments. They will also take the time to go over any costs associated with the procedure, both covered by insurance or not.

If you are interested in more information about your fertility potential and how cancer treatments may have an effect, contact a fertility specialist such as those at Fertility Answers.

Young women with breast cancer face unique issues. And in the South, there are more young women overall facing breast cancer. In Alabama, young African-American women are significantly more likely to suffer from breast cancer.

That is why SurviveAL is here. Part of the Gulf States Young Breast Cancer Survivor Network, SurviveAL's mission is to help improve the quality of life for young breast cancer survivors, as well as their family and friends, by providing continuing resources and support.
